If anyone mentions anything to me about Microsoft Sharepoint, my eyes usually light up. I will be fully attentive and probably talk with them about it for as long as time permits. Thats just how big of a Sharepoint geek that I am.

I started using and researching it heavily back when it was “Sharepoint Portal Server 2003″. It has come a long way since then. Sharepoint 2010 is released now, I have been reading up and came across something that gives a good perspective to the business decision makers on the reasons why you would want to have Sharepoint installed on virtualized IT infrastructure.

Here is a presentation from John Ferringer of www.MyCentralAdmin.com on the things you will need to consider if you want to implement a virtual SharePoint environment that can easily handle growth.

SharePoint on Imaginary Hardware – IndyTechFest 2010

View more presentations from John Ferringer.

I found that this presentation was not only geared for just the Sharepoint administrators out there, but also gave very clear, high level explanations on the product and the situations mentioned for non-technical decision makers who would be considering the various ways in which to implement such a product. I wish I could have attended the event to hear the talk, as it was local to me. Maybe next time!

I can’t wait to get my virtual machines running Sharepoint 2010 so I can explore some of the new features in the slimmed down “free” version called Sharepoint Foundation 2010 as well as the full product.

As it gets closer to mid-July I will post some updates on the status of the experimental Hosted Sharepoint solutions from Beep. As I get nearer to being ready to release the service to the public and find early adopters to try the service out I will send out some emails to all of you who signed up for the email list.

The Five Stages of Data Loss Grief

Apparently Gizmodo, a gadget blog, has put together other articles about memory all this week.

Memory [Forever] is our week-long consideration of what it really means when our memories, encoded in bits, flow in a million directions, and might truly live forever.

MY QUESTION TO YOU IS THIS: Do you backup important files on your computer such as photos, videos, work, and school documents?

If you don’t trust 100% that your backup plan will cover you if your computer died tomorrow, contact me and I’ll look at your current backup plan, and help you create a new one if needed.

I will be introducing a new service soon that will provide you with extra peace of mind. The new solution will be software that takes your backup and securely transfers it every night online. The data is encrypted, meaning no one will see your data. Your data is then stored in a world-class data center for safe-keeping and can easily be restored in the event that your computer crashes.

For a basic backup plan setup, the only cost you will incur is the cost of an external hard drive. I’m willing to help with a basic backup for free, if you buy the external hard drive needed. Additionally we can talk about the possibility of doing an offsite/internet backup every night for additional fees. (this is an experimental new service offering for me, so I need volunteers!)

Please don’t forget or put it off, if you’re not prepared when there is some sort of hardware failure you will be upset you didn’t check into setting up at least the most minimal of backup plans!

Please back up with Beep, just call or email me.

Remember, I’ll help you for free, you just buy the backup drive!

Unless you have been living under a rock, you probably know about Pandora Internet Radio by now. I have tried some of the other online radio and social music sites, and none of them quite compare to Pandora, even with my complaints I still have about the service. Pandora limits you in ways that seem a little frustrating, but I think their user interface and the overall experience of the site is one of the best around. Pandora limits the amount of stations you can create, and it your stations are inside a narrow little scroll window, these two items were my main complaints when using it in the past. They also have a good amount of large advertisements on the site, which can be annoying. Compared to other sites though, Pandora is the one with the best features and interface. They have a good deal of hardware compatibility for listening to online radio in places other than your computer’s web browser, like Pandora in the home, or Pandora on your mobile phone, which just a few other online radio sites can say they have.

The other sites I frequent for finding new artists and music to listen to include the following:
Digitally Imported (DI.FM), SKY.FM, and JazzRadio.com – These three sites, I believe are all under the same ownership, and they rock! They have the greatest selection of genre organized stations, some stations even have live DJ’s spinning on them at certain hours. JazzRadio is a newer one and so far I love it. SKY.FM includes more classical types of music, while DI.FM has more modern popular styles on it. Very few advertisements, very few negative remarks, as you can stream their stations in a number of different applications, and put the radio stream into mostly any music player that you’re comfortable with.
http://www.di.fm
http://www.sky.fm
http://www.jazzradio.com

Honorable mention sites are sites that on one hand are doing things that are fairly revolutionary, but for one reason or another, I personally just can’t stand many things about these site for regular online radio listening usage.
http://www.last.fm – I’ve been trying to use this one more lately, it is nice, but there are things I do not like about its radio features. Definitely cool for the social features, and the scrobbler application that uploads what you’re currently listening to, and displays it on your profile.
http://www.playlist.com –Playlist crawls the web for songs that are uploaded to servers. You search and if the artist/song you want is found, playlist then allows you to pick and choose what you want to play into your own custom playlists. Cool concept, poorly executed in some ways. Overrun with ads and annoying interface glitches. Upside is you can find lots of stuff, and play it immediately, if you want to hear a specific song at any given time.
http://www.slacker.com – seems like a cheap imitation of Pandora, have not used it long enough to know for sure.

Of course, you may end up deciding you want to purchase some of the music you discover on online radio. Most of these sites are also doing their part for the music industry and artists as far as offering listeners a chance to buy the music that is playing. Most music can be found on popular online music stores such as the ones below, though rarer stuff you may have to go to smaller independent sites to find legal downloads of the music.
http://www.amazon.com (my favorite)
http://www.rhapsody.com
http://www.itunes.com

Outlook 2003 or 2007 is taking up space when minimized, and you want it to hide when you are not using the program. BUT you still need it open to receive your email notifications…so what can you do to save your taskbar space?

It’s very simple. Over in the bottom right corner of your screen by the clock; right-click on the outlook icon. Then click on hide when minimized. This option is not easily found but it does save you some frustration.

Enjoy,

Did you ever accidentally delete some files from your computer and wonder if there is a way to get them back after they seem to be gone for good? Today I found this program called Recuva. It is a free program (accepting donations) that recovers files you may have accidentally deleted. Works better than some of the similar programs I have seen of this type.

Give it a try today if you need to “un-delete” some stuff.
